Selection process
In order to apply to the Swiss Ruinart Sommelier Challenge 2020 fill in the application form by answering all questions and completing the fields with your personal and contact details. The application deadline is March 5th 2020.

The Jury will evaluate the answers and nominate 25 participants who will be invited to participate in the Swiss Ruinart Sommelier Challenge on March 22nd in Bad Ragaz. The selected participants will receive an invitation via email on March 9th 2020.

Overnight

Aperitif & Dinner: your partner is warmly invited to join the aperitif and dinner at the end of the day. The Jury members will be present.

Overnight: for two people in a double room at Grand Resort Bad Ragaz. Check in on Sunday, March 22nd and Check out on Monday, March 23rd.

Evaluation & prizes
In the afternoon of the challenge day, the jury will evaluate the written tests and identify the winner. The winner will be announced on this website on March 25th at 12pm.
The winner will participate in the Champagne trip in July 2020 together with the winners of all the Ruinart Challenges in the world.

Louise Bryden
Winemaker Ruinart

Passionate about nature on land and underwater, Louise Bryden always wanted to find ways to understand our environment better and protect it using innovative technics.  She graduated as Winemaker from the University of Reims-Champagne Ardenne and worked in several wine regions in France, Chile and California to gain experience and embrace different visions of wine.
Louise Bryden worked at Moët & Chandon as a research and development project manager for a year. In 2018, she was Assistant Winemaker at Domaine Chandon California supervising the sparkling winemaking process on a daily basis. 

In March 2019 Louise Bryden joined the House Ruinart, taking part in the tasting committees, leading several research projects on the winemaking process and travelling to share Ruinart’s wine and vision across the globe.


Paolo Basso
Best Sommelier of the World 2013

Winner of the ‘ASI Best Sommelier of the World’ title in 2013, Basso is one of only six sommeliers in the world to have won both the European and global titles for ‘Best Sommelier’. He is also member of the technical committee of the International Sommelier Association (ASI). Member of the jury of the most prestigious international tasting competitions, he also works as lecturer and wine teacher at the Wine School in Changins, Switzerland, Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne in Switzerland and at the Worldsom Sommelier Academy in Bordeaux.


Michael Jenni
Winner of the Swiss Ruinart Sommelier Challenge 2019

After working as a sommelier at Park Weggis for several years, he founded his own import/export company in Wetzikon. Born in Kuwait, he studied in several Asian countries before graduating from the DCT International Hotel & Business Management School in Vitznau.

In 2016 he was named Swiss Champagne Ambassador and in 2019 he won the Ruinart Challenge being named Sommelier of the Year in Switzerland.  He completed the WSET Level 4 Diploma in 2015 and reached the CMS level of Advanced Sommelier in 2010.

Chandra Kurt
Journalist

Chandra Kurt, journalist and publisher from Zurich, is one of the best-known Swiss wine authors and wine critics. She has written over a dozen wine books.

  

Pierre Thomas
Wine expert

Pierre Thomas comes from the French speaking part of Switzerland and is a wine expert. He writes for several newspapers as Encore!, Hôtellerie & Gastronomie Hebdo and also has is own blog (www.thomasvino.ch) about wines.
